The following word lists have been created based on our reading series. The children should be able to use their knowledge of the sounds of the given letters and blend them together to read words. This will require some practice. Sounding out a word is a necessary skill that must be mastered if your child is to have future success in reading. Simply memorizing words is STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. Your child will develop a sight vocabulary as they become readers. Relying on memorization instead of encouraging children to use their skills to read words is a disservice to them. Even as they become efficient readers, there will sometimes be words that are unfamiliar to them. They must have a strong phonics background that they can rely on to help them decode these new words. Once a child is able to sound out a new word, they will then remember what it is the next time they see it.
I have also included a list of words that would be beneficial for a new reader to know based on necessity and frequency usage. This list also includes “jail words” that do not follow the rules for reading and must be memorized.
As we complete each of our letter books, these lists will enable you to reinforce the letter-sound associations the children have learned to date. Memory words are not decodable but all other words can be (and should be) sounded out first. As we complete a letter book and move on to the next one, you should work through each new list. Put them on index cards for better “flash” practice.
